How to Avoid Hunger in Between Meals

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

Most people have had days where they just can’t quite seem to shake the feeling of being hungry. You may find yourself constantly snacking between meals and wish you felt more satisfied. If you can relate to this, consider the following tips to help you avoid starving in between meals.

Eat Meals that Fill You Up

The best way to avoid starving in between meals is to eat enough during your meals. Your meals should be filled with a variety of healthy foods to keep you satiated for hours during the day. The USDA recommends trying to include the following in each meal: half your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables. This can be a bit hard to squeeze into a meal together, so you can vary them based on the meal. The other side of your plate should be filled with grains and proteins, and you can have one cup of dairy with every meal. To ensure that you’re eating foods that will fill you up, try to stick to whole, calorie-dense foods. These will help you stay full for longer.

Eat Healthy Snacks

If you do find yourself hungry in between meals, try to reach for healthy snacks. There is no set list of snacks that are best here. Instead, try to listen to your body and what would truly satisfy your hunger. This can be difficult at first, but it gets easier with practice. When your body is sending you hunger signals, it knows what foods it needs. Whether that is a cookie or a salad, you should satisfy that hunger. However, there are of course some snacks that are known to have positive health benefits. Eating raw carrots and celery acts as a natural toothbrush. They can help clean out any food that has gotten stuck between your teeth, and keep your teeth healthy and cavity-free.

Drink Enough Water

This is not always the case, but sometimes the feeling that people think is hunger is really thirst. If you’re not drinking enough water, it’s easy for your body to mix up the signals of wanting more water and wanting more food. In this case, it’s helpful to just use your best judgment. If you know that you ate enough food to keep you satisfied, but you still feel hungry, try to remember whether or not you’ve had enough water that day. In general, you should be drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water every day. This means that if you weigh 150 pounds, you should try to drink 75 oz, or roughly 9.5 cups of water every day. Staying properly hydrated can help you feel fuller for longer between meals.

Fueling your body correctly is one of the most important steps toward achieving optimum health. It’s important to fuel yourself with nutrient-dense, healthy foods. If you’re noticing that you still feel starving between meals, consider these tips to help yourself feel more full. Ultimately, though, if you feel hungry, just eat more!
