How to Cope With Stress After a Traumatic Event

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

Psychological and neurological understanding of trauma is continually evolving. Trauma can range from horrible, life-shattering experiences to seemingly minor events that affect you in ways you don’t even realize. Here are some of the initial things you can do to start healing.

Talk to a Therapist

Before anything else, you should formulate a plan to start processing what you’ve been through. While it can take some time to find someone who works for you, talking to a therapist can be a hugely important tool in this process. Vocalizing your thoughts and feelings can help you come to important realizations.

It can also simply make you feel better to articulate what you haven’t been able to for a long time. Many people–from those who suffer from chronic mental illness to those who just need some maintenance–need therapy. Start looking for a therapist sooner rather than later.

Get a Massage

Your mind and body are inextricably connected. While psychological work is essential, it can also be helpful to think about the physical side of things. Massage therapy allows you to relax and release built-up tension in your muscles. For centuries, it’s been used as a method of relaxation. Physical relaxation will help your mind to relax as well.

Look into local massage parlors to find the quality of work that your body and mind deserves. Other relaxation services–such as acupuncture, yoga, or various forms of exercise–should also be considered. Everybody relaxes differently. Try to find a new, stronger method that will help you avoid excessive stress.

Process Your Feelings

Therapy is a critical first step when it comes to processing trauma. There are also a variety of ways that you can process and express what you need to in order to heal. Sometimes, that might be very difficult–if it involves, for example, confrontation. Other times, it might not be as difficult, but it still has to be a unique process that you choose. Self-expression through art and sports are both healthy ways to make your emotions concrete. Drawing, writing, painting, music, and dance can be powerful tools. You’re going to need to find out which method is best for you. Everyone’s preferred coping mechanism is different.

Chronic problems with stress might mean that you need medication. That is nothing to be afraid of. One thing that works for someone else might not work for you, and that is perfectly okay. The key is to keep exploring until you find what does work.
