How to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

Cancer can be brought on by several factors and often it can seem unpredictable. Many may be worried about their risk of developing cancer. Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce your risk.

Quit Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices

Some forms of cancer are brought on by damage to your body over time. For example, lung cancer is typically caused by excessive smoking which damages the lungs. If you want to reduce your risk of developing cancer, then there are several unhealthy lifestyle choices that you need to quit.

Drinking and smoking are major risk factors and you should begin making efforts to quiet both. Being overweight and eating an unhealthy diet can also put you at risk. If you want to avoid getting cancer, you need to take care of your body. Lose weight, exercise regularly, and switch to a healthier diet.

Protect Your Skin

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. and it affects a large portion of the population. You may develop skin cancer for several reasons, but exposure to UV rays is one of the most prevalent causes. In order to reduce your risk of skin cancer, you need to protect your skin. Start by wearing sunscreen daily.

This includes the winter and overcast days as well. While makeup containing sunscreen exists, it doesn’t provide adequate SPF protection. It’s better to wear sunscreen under or over your makeup. When you go outside, keep your skin as covered as possible. Wear sunglasses, big hats, and clothes to cover your skin.

Undergo Screening

Cancer screenings are an effective way to prevent cancer from developing. When you are screened, doctors can catch early signs of cancer and address them. Without screening, cancer can slowly develop in your body undetected. By the time you notice it, it may be too late. Get screened now so you can be aware of your body’s health and address concerns before they become a bigger problem. Before getting screened, take some time to understand which cancers you are most at risk for. This can be determined by your age, lifestyle, and genetics.

There’s a lot you can do in your life right now to prevent cancer from becoming an issue later. Take a look at your life and see what changes you can make. Preventative measures make a world of difference.
