Why Everyone Needs a Full Night’s Sleep

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

You’ve probably heard the saying that the average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep each night. As common as this fact may be, not everyone gets enough sleep on a regular basis.

It’s important to know why this amount of sleep is necessary.

Strengthen Your Immune System

Getting plenty of sleep each night can help you be healthier because it strengthens your immune system so you can fight off infection. This is partly due to the changes in your stress hormone levels. These levels dip while you sleep and it allows your body to relax, recover, and refresh from the day.

If stress levels don’t lower for long enough, it can inhibit several functions of your body including your immune response. If your body is under too much stress, then your immune system can’t adequately fight off infection or disease. You need to get plenty of sleep so your body has time to lower your stress levels.

Improve Your Mood

Sleep benefits your body in many ways including your mental health. You can recognize these benefits by simply observing your behavior when you don’t get enough sleep. A lack of sleep can be a contributing factor to your depression.

Research has often shown poor sleep to be a symptom of depression, but new studies have found that lack of sleep can also contribute to feelings of depression. Poor sleep also causes your mood to decline and you feel more irritable. If you want to benefit your mental health and improve your mood, you need to make sleep more of a priority.

Improve Your Focus

When you get enough sleep each night, you can improve your ability to focus during the day. Your brain activity is increased and it’s easier for you to filter out important information. A lack of sleep impairs this ability. It’s harder to pay attention to new information and to stay focused on a task. Getting enough sleep can help you stay focused at school, work, and during your daily life. You can be more alert and on top of things when you are well-rested.

During sleep, your body performs many essential functions. It’s when you process the events from the day and prepare yourself for the coming day. Getting plenty of sleep each night entitles you to several benefits and it improves your overall quality of life.
