By the time you reach middle age, you may think you should be settled in life, but the truth is, you may encounter more stress than when you were younger. Middle age brings with it some unique challenges that neither younger or older people have to deal with. On the positive side, you have already developed the coping skills needed to confront them.
Raising Kids
Your kids are growing up and entering their teen years. They may not be the sweet, cooperative children they once were. They are changing daily, testing their limits, and trying on new identities. They are also challenging authority both at home and at school.
When the stress gets too much, take a deep breath and remember: your child is also experiencing an extremely stressful time. Keep the communication channels open, and listen with patience and empathy, even if you don’t like what you’re hearing. Instead of dictating, make your teen a partner in setting rules and boundaries.
Taking Care of Senior Loved Ones
On the other end of the spectrum, you may also find yourself more involved with your parents and grandparents as they age. Oftentimes it’s as simple as lending a helping hand when there’s heavy work to be done. Other times, your loved one may be facing serious health issues.
You want to help out, but you also need to reduce your own stress. Sometimes a change is needed in living arrangements. Senior loved ones should live close to you and their doctors. You can be close by in the case of an emergency.
Work Stress
Work problems are another stressor in mid-life. It’s not uncommon for mid-career people to feel stuck in their roles. You may feel overworked, unappreciated, and underpaid. You may realize that your chance to achieve what you want is slipping away.
First, realize that it’s never too late to set new goals and even change careers, if that’s what you desire. Re-evaluate what you need to make you happy at work and explore the possibilities. You may find a new path forward.
Stress is a normal part of life, and at times it can seem overwhelming. But at middle age, you have already proven yourself capable of handling tough situations. Take a moment to step away from the stressors, rethink your priorities, and don’t be afraid to make changes that will improve your life.
