How to Take Care of Your Self-Esteem Long-Term

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

Self-esteem and basic mental health are often incredibly intertwined. The better you feel about yourself, and the healthier your relationship with yourself overall, the easier it is to avoid slipping into depression and a state of poor mental health. There are a lot of things that can give your self-esteem a short-term boost, but what can you do to take care of it in the long-term?

Identify Your Positive Qualities

Many people’s self-esteem suffers because while they struggle to think positively of themselves, it’s comparatively effortless to identify negative qualities and traits. While awareness of negative traits can prompt personal growth, you tend to suffer if that’s all you focus on. Work on identifying your positive qualities and use them to create a more balanced perspective of yourself. You may find it helpful to keep a journal. Journaling can prompt introspection that can make it easier to identify the good things about yourself.

Take Care of Your Health

It’s so much easier to feel good mentally when you feel good physically. That applies to your self-esteem too. The better your health and physical condition, the easier it is to have good self-esteem. By eating a healthy diet and staying physically active, you can take steps to keep your weight at a healthy level. Your diet and hydration levels will also impact the appearance of your hair and skin. Then there’s your smile. There are many bite issues an orthodontist can fix that might be dragging down your self-esteem. They can also help you with keeping your teeth white and straight so you can feel good about your grin.

Find Balance In Your Life

Finding balance in life won’t solve all your problems, but it can make them easier to manage and help you take control over your stress levels. It’s good to challenge yourself. Challenges bring growth. Overburdening yourself, however, can prompt feelings of failure and inadequacy. If you struggle to say no when asked to do things, make it a goal to work on that. Setting boundaries for yourself will help you protect your mental health and self-esteem.

Taking a long-term approach to your self-esteem takes hard work, but it can be done. Work on identifying your positive qualities, taking care of your health, and finding balance in your life. Progress may be slower than what you would see from short-term boosts, but the lasting effects make it worth the effort.
