What You Need to Create a Whole New Outfit

by | Other Topics | 0 comments

You don’t need a lot of money to create a whole new look, just a little creativity! With the items you have in your closet and maybe a purchase or two, you can freshen up your style and feel great about your look. Here are some ways to create a whole new outfit without breaking the bank.

New Colors

Have you gotten stuck in a color rut? Many women begin to drop bright colors as they age, hanging out in the shadows of blacks and grays. But you are bright, bold, and beautiful and you deserve to stand out! Reintroduce shots of color into your wardrobe. You can start small at first. Pair chunky, vivid jewelry with a little black dress, or cinch that waist with a brightly colored belt and carry a matching purse. As you begin to feel more at home in bold colors, branch out of your comfort zone and see how you like other colors. You might find that you look amazing in lime green or pumpkin orange!

Repurpose Items

One way to create a new outfit without spending a penny is to use an item that you already have in a new and unique way. Cut outdated jeans into trendy shorts. Make a stodgy pair of jeans a little more rugged by adding tears. Turn that way-too-big t-shirt into a jersey dress. Extend the life of your favorite t-shirt by cutting it into a halter top. Add lace borders to a boring dress. Roll up boyfriend style jeans to turn them into capris. Use a poncho as a top. When you let your creative juices flow, there is no limit to what you can do with what is already in your closet.

New Shoes

You can change the whole vibe of an outfit simply by changing the shoes. You can dress up jeans with a strappy stiletto. Or dress down a dress with converse. Take on a school-girl aesthetic by pairing Mary Janes or loafers with short skirts or jeans, then go casual with sneakers. Or find a cute pair of black booties to make any outfit look svelte.

A New Dress

You can create several styles out of one strategically chosen dress. First, find a simple, versatile, monochromatic dress. A knee-length fitted cotton dress in a neutral color is perfect for this. You should measure yourself before buying dresses so you can avoid having to return them. Next, discover all the ways you can change it up. For a casual look, pair it with a vest and nice sneakers. For a classier vibe, wear a thick belt and booties. To get a grungier look, pair it with a jean jacket and converse. For a cottage core aesthetic, add a collar and pointed heels. Wear it on game day with a sweater and boots. There are so many ways to style one simple dress.

Accessorize

Brighten an old look with new accessories. This could be a stylish purse, a trim jacket, chunky necklaces, large earrings, a fun scarf, adding a belt, or trying a different pair of shoes. Whatever you choose, accessories can change your look in an instant. You can use them to dress anything up or down, or just add a pop of color to a drab outfit. Have fun with it! And remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to increase your accessory repertoire. Thrift shops are a great place to find unique pieces on a dime.

New Combinations

Like most people, you probably pair the same clothing items every single time that you wear them. It is easy to turn on autopilot when you are getting dressed. One less thing to worry about, right? But you could be missing out on a great outfit that is right in front of you, hidden in plain sight. Take a night to try on every single possible combination of your clothes! Don’t forget to sample different tucks and folds, as well. This may seem tedious and pointless, but you might be surprised at the fun and flattering combinations that come out of this simple exercise. It is worth the time it will take if you can uncover even one or two new outfits without spending a penny.

Go Vintage

If you want an outfit that you are certain not to see on anyone else, purchase a few period pieces from your local vintage shop. With vintage-wear, you will save money, help the planet, and always have a good conversation starter! If there are no vintage clothing shops near you, there are several good online stores.

Get a New Set of Eyes

For a fresh new look at your closet, ask a friend to come over and style you. Give her free range over your wardrobe and watch her creative juices flow. With a new set of eyes, your friend will probably find a pairing you never considered.

Life is too short to get into a clothing rut. Brighten your look with something new, or simply wear your old clothing in brand-new ways. Go out of your comfort zone and have fun with it!
